Pomeranian Dog Breed Blip

If you are looking for a pooch to pamper, the Pomeranian is an excellent choice! The tiniest member of the Spitz family of dogs, these adorable little pups weigh just 3 to 7 pounds. The breed originated in an area of Germany called "Pomerania", and were imported to Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria. They have since become very popular throughout the world, and are a good choice for people who have to spend a lot of time indoors. Pomeranians do not require a lot of exercise, and enjoy the pampered life. They do require daily brushing to keep their long, double coats in good condition.

Pomeranian Temperament: The extroverted Pomeranian exhibits intelligence and a vivacious spirit. With his docile temper, pert animation and cocky attitude, he is a most appealing pet and companion.

Activity level: Buoyant, alert and inquisitive, the Pom is an ideal housepet for adults who spend a lot of time indoors. He makes a good watchdog, manages with a minimum of exercise and enjoys being pampered.

Height/Weight: This sturdy little dog may weigh from 3-7 lb (1.5-4 kg) with 4-6 lb (2-3 kg) being considered ideal.

Coat: Over the soft, fluffy undercoat there's a long, perfectly straight and glistening outer coat covering the body. It's abundant around the neck, shoulders and chest where it forms a frill of profuse, off-standing hair.

Color: Pomeranians come in a variety of colors and color combinations, which include Black Pomeranians, brown, chocolate, beaver, red, orange, cream, orange, sable Pomeranians, wolf sable, blue, white Pomeranians and parti-colored.

Pomeranian Grooming: Gentle daily brushing is needed to keep the coat free of mats.

Whether you call them Pocket Pomeranians, Teacup Pomeranians, Tea Cup Pomeranians, Toy Pomeranians, Miniature Pomeranians, or Mini Pomeranians, buying  the smallest Pomeranian puppy you can find is a sure recipe for a teacup full of heartache! Responsible breeders occasionally will have a puppy that is smaller than it's littermates (it's what we once referred to as the "runt" of the litter). Any breeder that selectively breeds to create a smaller and smaller puppy is not a breeder with whom you want to do business. The reason for this is that smaller puppies usually have a number of health problems. They can suffer from Hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar), knee and hip problems, brain defects, kidney problems, heart problems and more. What's more, these itty bitty dogs are as delicate as flowers, and can easily be injured or killed by being accidentally stepped on or kicked, or from something as seemingly innocent as a fall off of the sofa or bed. Don't buy into this unfortunate trend! Dogs are pets - not fashion accessories or toys. Be sure to buy your Pomeranian puppy only from a responsible, reputable Pomeranian breeder. Avoid any breeder who advertises Pocket, Teacup, Miniature, Toy or Mini Pomeranian puppies.
