Behavior Issues: Yes Moby is NOT AGGRESSIVE
I would not call this a behavior issue, since it’s only him acting on his instincts, but I wanted to make note of it.
He has a strong prey drive. I’ve mostly broken him of chasing our indoor cats, but outdoor cats and other unfamiliar cats are a real gamble. Also, our impulse control training goes completely out the window when he’s excited. He tries to chase birds and squirrels, and he recently climbed a fence to break into our coop and kill five of our chickens. Paired with the fact that he seems to be perpetually bored, it has become a bit of a problem.
He also compulsively eats poop. Whether it’s breaking into the cats litter boxes or snatching up poop off the side of the road while we are walking. It’s really gross and I haven’t figured out how to stop him other than physically restraining him and blocking his access.

Moby’s Personality
Moby is a smart dog. He is constantly looking for something to do, whether it’s snuffling around for food or finding a toy to throw around or tear apart. He loves to sit and watch me cook in the kitchen, although I’m pretty sure he just wants food. He definitely needs an outlet for his energy and someone to keep him entertained and engaged. He is always looking for something new to do.
He is definitely trainable, and is very food-motivated.
Moby’s Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
For food, I use Purina Dog Chow complete beef flavor. He seems to really like Pork Chomps treats, but given how food motivated he is, anything he can safely eat will work.
He loves lick mats and snuffle mats, he loves a stuffed Kong, and he really loves to rip apart stuffed animals.
His favorite game is ‘keep away’ with a plush or a chew toy.
He likes to go on walks and explore, but he has a tendency to pull on his leash. I’ve done my best to break him of this habit, and while he’s improved a lot, he needs to be reminded to walk nicely.
Cute Moby Story:
I brought him with me to an RC airfield so I could meet up with a friend, and so he could get some enrichment. When my buddy was demonstrating some of his flight maneuvers, Moby got up and started trying to catch the plane out of the air. I had never seen him so excited, he was barking and jumping. I thought he was scared at first, but his tail was wagging high. It seemed like he was really having a good time.
Why is Moby Being Rehomed?
Moby has been trying to get at our chickens, with several successes. He most recently climbed over a fence and ripped into the side of the coop and killed five of our birds.
He hasn’t really been able to settle in at our house. There’s too much going on at home, and I can’t let him out without supervision. He also always seems bored all the time, and this is partly due to the fact that I have to keep him kenneled when I can’t supervise him. Between school and work, I haven’t really been able to spend all the time I want to with him.
This most recent incident has made me realize that this isn’t really the ideal home for him.
Moby’s Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
I think the ideal home would be a family home with some older children, or another dog that he can play and roughhouse with. An experienced dog owner that knows how to handle a stubborn dog would be great. A big yard with a tall fence would be the best, since he can easily climb over a short wire fence. And no small critters. A household cat is manageable, since he can be broken of chasing indoor cats. But no chickens, and small dogs are a bit of a risk due to his prey drive.
Ideally I would like to be able to contact the new family just to hear how my boy is doing and answer any questions. I really love this dog, just like I did when I adopted him. Having to give him up is tearing me apart but I know we’ll both be happier this way. Moby is a great dog, and in the right hands I know his personality can shine.
I’m not sure what his life was like before I met him at the shelter, but I don’t think it was good. Moby needs firm guidance and space to heal. I sincerely want him to find his forever home, and I’m deeply upset that it couldn’t be me.
